HER HISTORY IN EXTENSION CONTEMPLATIVA INTERNACIONAL

The history of the Spanish Centering Prayer Groups in Central Florida starts in 1991, when Ilse Reissner moved to Altamonte Springs from Miami. She had learned and practiced Centering Prayer for a few years with Father Bill Sheehan, who in turn was one of the first disciples of Fr. Keating. She searched for a prayer group in Orlando where she could continue practicing Centering Prayer. She first met Sister Clair Gregg, also a disciple of Father Sheehan and founder of Centering Prayer in Central Florida. Sister Claire in turn referred her to Basha Perez’s Centering Prayer group in Altamonte Springs. There Ilse met Maria Teresa Torregrosa, a parishioner of Mary Magdalene Church in Maitland, where she directed a Bible study in Spanish. Soon, Ilse joined them. These two friends decided to introduce Centering Prayer to the Spanish-speaking group and invited Dr. Adalberto Henriquez to give a talk about Father Thomas Keating’s works and Centering Prayer. This Mary Magdalene Church Spanish group was the first of four groups that Ilse founded in Central Florida. To this date, all of them still get together every week to practice Centering Prayer.

Another quality that Ilse had is that she was a great translator. Thinking that the Spanish groups should be able to read Father Keating’s books, Ilse translated some parts of Invitation to Love. It didn’t take long before Father Keating heard about the translations and asked Ilse to translate the whole book, followed by Open Mind Open Heart and Mystery of Christ, and his articles in the Contemplative Outreach Newsletter. For many years Ilse accompanied Father Keating as a translator on his trips to the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, and over time they became great friends.

As Centering Prayer had a great acceptance in countries in the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and South America, in the late 1990’s Ilse and Dr Adalberto Henriquez saw the need to start an international organization and founded America Contemplativa which later became Extension Contemplativa Internacional, an entity that united the heads in different countries to organize workshops, retreats and talks with Father Thomas Keating.

We will always be very thankful for everything Ilse did for Extensión Contemplativa Internacional. She did it all with love, much wisdom, great energy and faith in God. Our dear Ilse is now in heaven and is resting in God’s Arms.

Rest in Peace Ilse

THAT IS HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS IN OUR LIVES, WE OFFER OUR EFFORT WHICH MANY TIMES IS VERY SMALL, AND GOD DOES THE REST!!!

EN MEMORIA DE ILSE REISSNER

1929 – 2021
