The New Testament calls it salvation. The 12-step program calls it recovery.
In step 11 of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program, participants are invited to engage in a practice of meditation for spiritual recovery. This meditation is through prayer to improve conscious personal contact with God as He is understood by the individual.
We are not all addicted to alcohol, but we are all addicted in some way. It is the human condition. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world.
This Rector’s Forum shows how the gospel principles in the 12 steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol and other escapist behaviors, to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.
Lent is the call to return with our hearts to God who deeply loves and forgives us. This forum series will underscore how redemption comes to us in and through the messes we make of our lives, not despite them. The practice of Centering Prayer is one of the most helpful practices to keep us grounded and moving forward guiding us to greater wholehearted living.
Join me for this five-week community of learning beginning on Sunday, February 14, at 10:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall.
